Making A Vision Board For The New Year

What Is A Vision Board?

A vision board is a collage of images, pictures, and affirmations representing a person’s goals and aspirations. It is supposed to help you focus on and manifest your desires and intentions.

Simply put, the board provides a visual representation of your goals and aspirations and is to help motivate and inspire you to take action towards achieving them.

These boards became very popular in the early 2000’s when Rhonda Byrne’s book “The Secret” introduced readers to the law of attraction. Byrne’s shared how visualization and positive thinking could actually manifest dreams into reality.

Below is an example of a vision board I created for myself in 2019. As you can see, it’s basically photos and words cut from magazines, then glued onto a piece of mat board.

Do Vision Boards Really Work?

While there is no scientific evidence that vision boards are help people achieve their goals, many people believe that they can help provide motivation and inspiration.

Some people find a vision board helps them clarify their goals and aspirations. Having a visual reminder helps them visualize their desired outcomes.

Ultimately, whether or not a vision board is effective will depend on the individual and how they choose to use it. And personally, I’m a believer because I have experienced its magic first hand!

Are Vision Boards Helpful In Achieving Goals?

Again, there is no scientific proof these boards will work.

However, a lot of creatives, business professionals, and students swear by them. Just articulating and visualizing what you want will send those intentions into the atmosphere, which can help make them a reality.

I have known many people who have used vision boards to find their dream home and soul mate. I personally use mine for defining what I want to have happen, then sit back and let the Universe do its thing.

Who Should Make A Vision Board?

Anyone can make a vision board! It’s a useful tool for anyone who want to focus on and work towards a specific goal or achievement.

Creating a vision board is a fun and creative activity that allows you to express your hopes, dreams, and desires.

It can be done at any time of the year, and in private or with a group of trusted friends or family.

Whether you are a student, a professional, a parent, or a retiree, making a vision board can be a valuable way to focus on what you want to achieve and take action towards making your dreams a reality.

Making A Vision Board

Most people I know use pictures and words when making their vision boards. They save them throughout the year, then paste them onto a piece of poster or mat board.

Other people prefer to use their computer and digital tools to create a vision board.

Myself, I like my vision boards to be easily seen and keep them hung in my office right by my desk. I’m afraid if I used a digital version, I might forget to look at it often!

Finding Images & Inspiration

To make a vision board similar to the one I made, start by gathering a selection of images and pictures. If you have a particular affirmations that represent your goals and aspirations, print it out and use it.

I get most of my visuals from magazines, or find them on the internet. I also occasionally create fancy quotes on because they have great (and free) digital tools!

Pick A Base

Determine the size you want for the base of your vision board, and what material you want it made from.

Some people use poster board or mat board, while others use foam board.

I have used them all, but I like foam board because it’s light, sturdy, and can be propped against a wall.

Arrange the images, pictures, and affirmations on the board in a way that feels meaningful to you.

You can use glue sticks, washi tape, or other adhesives to attach the items to the board.

Write It Down

Something I do before gluing down the photos is writie down my goals and desires directly onto the board. The photos and phrases will cover the words, but inside I know what’s underneath and writing them down takes them from my mind onto the surface.

Use your glue sticks or washi tape to adhere the photos and phrases onto the board. After I have all the pieces glued down, I turn it over and sign it. I do this because it feels like I then have made a contract with the universe.

Where Should You Hang Your Vision Board?

The last step is to hang your vision board in a place where you will see it regularly. I like to hang mine on a wall in my office or in my bedroom.

Look at your vision board regularly. This helps keep you focused on your goals and can be a source of motivation and inspiration.

How often should you make a vision board?

There really isn’t a specific rule as to how often you should make a vision board.

Some people like to create a new vision board every year. Others (like myself) make one every few years or whenever they feel a need to refocus on their goals.

It is also helpful to review and update your board periodically to ensure it is still reflecting your current goals and aspirations.

And think about creating a new vision board if you want to set new goals for yourself or have a special project that warrants its own board. It is ultimately up to you to decide how often you want to make a vision board.

What can you do with old vision boards?

Some people choose to keep their old vision boards as a reminder of the goals they have achieved, while others prefer to throw them away or cut them up and recycle the materials.

Personally, I keep my old vision boards to refer to when I’m making a new one. The old boards allow me to see how much I’ve achieved, and reminds me of what I still want to do or perhaps eliminate because its no longer a goal.

If you have managed to achieve many of the goals on your old vision board, think about celebrating your success! You can even create a scrapbook or a junk journal using items from your old boards so you can continue having them inspire and motive you.

Whether you choose to hold on to your old vision boards or upcycle them into something else, it’s always fun and motivating to look back on your journey and see how far you have come.
