Here are the Best Tarot Card Storage Ideas

As a long-time tarot reader and tarot deck collector, I am aways seeking the best tarot card storage ideas. And I’m not alone in this, I know! For many of us readers, finding the right tarot card storage container is one of the first things we look for after opening a new deck of cards. We like to keep our favorite tarot decks in sacred places, and are always looking for a great way to store them.

After all, we don’t want to have our cards just sitting around, collecting negative energy or outside influences. And, we want to keep our card decks in the best condition possible so they last a long time.

There are many different tarot card storage ideas, from keeping them in a fabric bag or simple cotton muslin bag, to making a special box for them. Many readers I know leave them in their original box so they’re ready for the next reading, while others put them in metal tins or intricately wrap them in beautiful silk scarfs.

Why The Big Fuss About Tarot Card Storage?

Tarot readers consider their oracle cards or any tarot card deck to be their sacred spiritual tools. And the longer you’ve been reading, there’s an excellent chance you have a LOT MORE than a single deck!

Plus there are so many different sizes/styles/types of decks – so organization is a must.

Let’s talk sizes: some readers prefer oversized decks or pocket-sized ones, while others want a standard tarot deck. Finding tarot card storage to accommodate them all can be challenging unless you are OK with keeping everything in a large storage bin or one big box!

To me, the most important reason tarot card storage is a necessity is because you want to protect your cards from any negative energies that they can be exposed to. And we want to keep them physically safe.

Another important reason is because the tarot cards we use are sacred and divine. To honor that divinity, we want to respect our tarot card decks and store them properly.

How to Prepare Your Tarot Cards for Storing them

The first thing you need to do to prepare for storing them is to get rid of any negative energies. This is for any deck, old or new, in addition to the container you plan on storing them in.

New decks and containers can hold on to energies from the manufacturer or the store they were purchased at. And old decks or containers may still have lingering energies from the previous owner.

There are so many different ways to cleanse your cards, so I recently wrote an article about it: 12 Quick & Easy Ways to Cleanse Tarot Cards. You can use these techniques to cleanse the storage container as well.

After everything has been cleansed, spend some inspired moments with the cards and their proposed storage containers. This will help establish an even deeper connection and will manifest your own positive and intuitive energy into the cards and storage item.

Once the container and cards have been cleansed and filled with your good juju, it’s time to put them into their tarot card storage box or display them in your sacred space.

Now that you know the ritual for cleansing and storing your cards, I’m going to share 22 wonderful tarot card storage ideas.

The key to a good tarot card storage box, bag, bowl, or container is it should be large enough to keep the deck safe and be the right size for your deck.

    FAQ About Storing Tarot Cards

Here are 6 frequently asked questions about tarot card storage:

    • What is the best way to store tarot cards to keep them safe? Storing your tarot cards in a protective case or box will keep them safe from dust, moisture, and bending. You can also use velvet or fabric bags, wooden boxes, and leather cases.
    • Should tarot cards be wrapped in a specific material? Some readers like to wrap their tarot cards in silk or velvet for spiritual protection because it keeps the cards’ energy clear for them. However, this is more of a personal preference than a requirement.
    • Can I store multiple tarot decks together? Yes you can, however it’s recommended you keep each deck in its own bag or box. Keeping them separated avoids mixing energies and protects the cards from scratches and wear.
    • Is it okay to leave tarot cards out on display? Displaying tarot cards is fine, especially if they’re part of an altar or reading space. Just make sure they’re kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
    • Can I use old containers for tarot card storage or should I buy new? Whenever possible, use what you already have! Save your pennies and the earth by repurposing and upcycling what you’ve got hanging around. However, always be sure to cleanse your storage containers before putting your decks inside.
    • Is there any reason I can’t just keep my tarot cards in the box they came in? That’s perfectly fine and many readers find this to be the best way for them! It makes it easier to know what’s inside the box and is particularly helpful if you have a big collection of tarot card decks (as I do!).
